چکیده

The basic hypothesis for the assessment of fire resistance of wood structures is that for temperatures above 300 oC, wood is no longer able to sustain any load. Consequently, the determination of the location of the 300 oC isotherm, the charring depth, is decisive for the result of fire resistance calculation methods. Charring rate of wood is dependent of numerous factors, such as wood species (density, permeability or composition), moisture or direction of burning (along or across the grain). Eurocode 5, Part 1-2, presents several methods for the calculation of fire resistance of timber structures that are divided into simplified and advanced. In this paper simplified and advanced methods are compared regarding the calculation of the charring depth. Finite element simulations have been performed, using the proposed wood properties of Eurocode 5 using finite element code SAFIR. The influence of parameters such as wood density, moisture or anisotropy has been investigated. The results obtained with finite element calculations were then compared with Eurocode 5 simplified models. Some inconsistencies between methods have been observed. This paper presents proposals to overcome some of the inconsistencies as well as to extend the applicability of the models.

The Fire Performance of Exposed Timber Panels

Cross-laminated timber is increasingly being used in the construction of high-rise buildings due to its simple manufacturing system. In term of fire resistance, cross-laminated timber panels are promoted as having excellent fire resistance, comparable to that of non-combustible materials and to heavy timber construction, due to the ability of thick wood assemblies to char slowly at a predictabl...

NUMERICAL MODELING OF CHARRING MATERIAL ABLATION WITH CONSIDERING CHEMICAL REACTION, MASS TRANSFER AND SURFACE HEAT TRANSFER EFFECTS

Presently there is a little information that relates to heat shield systems.  Also this information is not certain in so many cases.  The main reason is that accurate calculations for measuring the sacrificing rate of various materials have not been obtained yet.  Additionally, the real scale test has two disadvantages: high cost and low flexibility, and for each case we must perform a new test...

Assessment of Structure-Specific Fragility Curves for Soft Storey Buildings Implementing IDA and SPO Approaches

Soft storey building is popular due to the functional and aesthetic purpose, despite its weakness in resisting seismic excitation. Nonlinear Static (Pushover) Analysis (POA) is a time saving and simple assessment procedure prosposed in Eurocode 8 (EC8). However, its reliability in designing structure still remains a question. At the first stage, seismic performance of several building models us...

Factors Influencing the Charring Rate of Chinese Wood by using the Cone Calorimeter

Wood has better load-bearing capacity following the formation of a char layer when exposed to fire. The charring rate is the most important property of wood with respect to its fire resistance and fire integrity. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of factors, including density, gas permeability, ring width, grain orientation, and heat flux, on the charring rate. The char...

Buckling strength of uniaxially compressed orthogonally stiffened plates

The bucking strength calculation includes the determination of global buckling strength, the effective plate width and the torsional buckling strength of open section stiffeners. In each calculation the classic strength formula should be modified considering the effect of initial imperfections and residual welding stresses. The calculation method of Det Norske Veritas design rules and the Euroc...
